Dr. Schallhorn is the Chief Medical Director for Optical Express, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco and operates a private practice in San Diego.
After graduating from Colorado State University, Steve entered the US Navy and underwent flight training to become an F-14 pilot and later served as a Navy Fighter Weapons School instructor (TOPGUN). He then completed a medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, with ophthalmology residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and cornea fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute (University of Southern California). Steve was the founder of the Department of Defense refractive surgery program which now consists of over 20 centers providing mission-enhancing surgery to active duty personnel and was the first surgeon in the DoD to perform LASIK and PRK procedures and implant phakic intraocular lenses. In February 2007, Steve retired from the Navy as the US Navy’s Refractive Surgery Program Manager.
Jim is a Professor of Optical Sciences and Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Arizona. His expertise is in design and development of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and the modeling of visual performance. He has received Career Development and Innovative Ophthalmic Research awards from Research to Prevent Blindness and holds two patents and two additional patents pending. Jim is widely published in the fields of optical science and ophthalmic optics. He provides optical physics consultation for companies who produce surgically implanted lenses, contact lenses and spectacle lenses as well as those who develop ophthalmic instruments for measurement and imaging.
